We are operative

It is time we stop discussing which sectors and industries Norway should focus on "after the oil" and rather ask us what competence we will build on in the future. Western Norway with the Bergen region at the forefront has been good at building innovative industry verticals through cluster initiatives. At the same time, these industries now face major common challenges and not least opportunities, which require coordinated skills enhancement across the verticals - to develop relevant manpower, enough knowledge and insight.

Cognitive technology / artificial intelligence is such a central area. Artificial intelligence will become a game changer that challenges both the entire region and the nation in terms of climate change, sustainability and future work. How can the public and private sector in Norway secure a competitive advantage through increased competence and access to relevant expertise?

Therefore, a strong and broad consortium has launched the Norwegian Cognitive Center, which is established in Media City Bergen. Behind the initiative are six industrial clusters representing over 500 companies, many of them globally leading in their fields: GCE Ocean Technologies, NCE Media, NCE Finance Innovation, NCE Seafood Innovation, NCE Maritime Cleantech and Proptech Innovation. We do this together with several research and educational institutions like UIB, HIB, NHH, NORCAR and NORA. In addition, several public actors delivering digitalisation services on a national level are heavily involved in the initiative like Helse Bergen and Bergen Kommune.

The ambition is to raise competence and knowledge, as well as to build capabilities in artificial intelligence, and thereby give industry in Norway a precise and powerful competitive advantage.

The Norwegian Cognitive Center will provide services complementary to both academic research, consultancies and established commercial products on any platform. Our competitive advantage is access to wide and cross sector competence in data science, enabled by the sharing of resources and co-oloperation in a wide consortium. The consortium representants a large part of the Norwegian Global leaders in various industries, public and health sector and relevant academic disciplines. In a partnership with IBM International, we deliver applied AI and tools and methodology for onboarding and use for all. We aim to deliver the future AI expertise, attract the best and develop new talent.
